Mercury switches comprise one or more sets of electrical contacts within a sealed glass envelope containing a trace amount of mercury. The envelope might also contain pressured hydrogen‚ an inert gas‚ or a vacuum. Gravity is always pulling the mercury down to the lowest position in the envelope. When the switch is tipped in the proper way‚ the mercury makes contact with a series of contacts‚ completing an electrical circuit. Tilting the switch the other way pushes the mercury away from that set of contacts‚ breaking the circuit.
