An LED is a two-lead semiconductor light source, which emits light when activated. When a proper voltage is provided to the LED terminal, the electrons within the device can recombine with the electron holes and release energy in the form of photons. This is referred to as electroluminescence. The energy band-gap of the semiconductor determines the colour of the LED.
