The 93C46 is an EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read-only memory). The device is designed with a variety of industrial and commercial applications in mind, where low-power and low-voltage functioning are crucial. To understand how it works we should look more closely at its ORG operation. When the ORG pin is connected to VCC, the 93C46's 1024 bits of serial electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) are divided into 64 words of 16 bits each and 128 words of 8 bits each (when the ORG pin is tied to the ground). Space-saving 8-lead PDIP, 8-lead JEDEC SOIC, 8-lead EIAJ SOIC, 8-lead Ultra Thin mini-MAP (MLP 2x3), 8-lead TSSOP, and 8-lead dBGA2 packages are all available for the 93C46. This EEPROM is accessed via a 3 wire serial communication interface. Device operation is controlled by seven instructions issued by the host processor. It operates on 7 instruction sets namely READ, EWEN, ERASE, WRITE, ERAL, WRAL, and EWDS.
